The Pirot District is situated in the southeastern part of the Republic of Serbia.
The District comprises the town and municipality of Pirot, as well as the municipalities of Bela Palanka, Babušnica and Dimitrovgrad.
According to the 2011 census, the District has a total of 92.277 inhabitants. The seat of the District is in the town of Pirot.
The District is a regional centre of the State Administration and it encompasses regional units of all State Administration bodies established for the purposes of that particular centre.
The Pirot Pirot District was founded in 1992 on the basis of the Regulation on the Manner of Performing the Duties of Ministries and Special Organisations Outside the Ministries (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia N° 3/92), while its transformation into the Pirot District has been performed on the basis of the Regulation on Administrative Districts (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia N° 15/06)
